This session is intended to serve as a primer to understanding the range of approaches to supporting retention and student success initiatives in higher education. As greater emphasis is placed on retaining current students, it is important for faculty and staff to have clear definitions and goals in mind amid emerging pressures and shifting priorities. In this session, we will explore the complex nature of addressing student retention challenges. Specifically, we will explore common definitions of retention and student success, identify common strategies and structures for implementing student success initiatives, and outline some of the student success goals and initiatives specific to Mason. Attendees will have an opportunity to engage in exercises to map the range of retention and student success initiatives at Mason, and participate in group dialogues to share information and resources to support student success.
